Cobb Social Studies Teachers Awarded $1 Million ‘Teaching American History’ Grant
The Cobb County School District has been awarded a three-year, $999,425 grant from the U.S. Department
of Education for the professional development of Cobb’s high school U.S. history teachers! Funded under
the Teaching American History Grants Program, the grant is intended to improve student achievement by
enhancing teachers’ understanding of, and appreciation for, traditional United States history. Read more
Cobb ACT Scores Climb For 6th Straight Year
Graduates top state & national averages in all subjects
Cobb County high school students posted their sixth consecutive composite-score increase on the ACT,
recently released scores show. On the 2010 ACT, Cobb students also outperformed their peers at the state and
national level in every section of the college preparation test. By topping state and national averages in all four
subject areas, Cobb graduates indicated they are well prepared for college or career choices. Read more
Christopher James of Osborne High School Named Cobb School District Teacher of the Year
The Cobb County School District is proud to announce the selection of Christopher L. James, special education teacher at Osborne High School, as the 2010-2011
district Teacher of the Year! Superintendent Fred Sanderson surprised Mr. James with the honor during a special pep rally at the school
Aug. 13. Mr. James now represents Cobb in the statewide program, which will announce a winner later this school year. Mr. James was
previously named Cobb County’s high school level Teacher of the Year, which made him eligible for the district-wide merit.
FREE Tutoring Services Offered
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 requires that Cobb County District arrange for Supplemental Educational
Services /SES (free tutoring) to eligible students of any Title I school that is identified by the State as “needs improvement”
for one or more years. Parents may select services from the State Board of Education approved Provider list (tutoring companies).
Schools eligible for SES for the 2010-2011 school year are Powder Springs Elementary, Tapp Middle School, and Osborne High School.

2010 No Child Left Behind School Choice Info
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB Act) provides parents with the option to seek enrollment of their children
in another designated school if their home school has not demonstrated three years of sustained improvement
in overall student performance and is on the Needs Improvement List. This requirement is called the "NCLB School Choice Option." Click here for Info and School
